Child health-care| Common illness and how to cope with them | Children well-being

Children’s health ,which is also known as Pediatrics. It mainly focuses on the well being of children from conception . A healthy child’s development actually begins before the birth and depends on various factors of the parents health history and also some genetic aspect. 

After the birth of the child , new aspects arise in terms of the health care of the newborn. Various matters like breastfeeding , sleeping pattern of the child, screening test , timely vaccination etc . So basically a child’s health care is a process which starts since conception and it continues through adolescence. 

Basically a child’s health doesn’t only refer to the health perspective , it also includes their mental and social well being. Generally most parents know the basic steps of taking care of their child like providing good and healthy food , maintaining their sleep habits, making sure of their regular exercise and so on. But besides these basics of child care , they may also need the professional look out time to time. The parents need to make sure that their children are getting regular checkups with the health care provider, so that they can be aware of third children’s health details , to get better knowledge about their health, as they say prevention is better than cure.

There are a number of common childhood illnesses , and unfortunately even the healthiest babies can also catch these diseases , so it’s better to know about their symptoms beforehand for better and prompt treatment. Some of the common childhood illnesses are ;

  1. Cough , cold and ear infection :

It is normal for any child to have a cough or cold for about 8 times a year. It can be due to seasonal change or some kind of allergic reaction .Usually it gets better on its own and is not that serious but if it doest then doctor’s attention must be needed .Because a serious or lingering cough and cold can lead to asthma, croup, pneumonia etc. Some of the signs of these are ,

  • High fever
  • The recurring cough at night
  • Difficulty in breathing 
  • Changes in the skin colour , such as if the skin is getting pale or blue.

Visit the doctor if your child has any of these symptoms. 

Sore throats or colds are very common and they are a kind of viral illness also known as flu. Mostly it gets better in 5 to 7 days .

Ear infection is also very common in children and they are often a result of cold and sometimes cause temperature . Sometimes infections are caused by the viruses and can be treated by antibiotics.

  1. Chicken pox :

It is also a very mild and  common illness and not only the children but the adults can also get it . It is caused by a virus called varicella-zoster .Now there is also a vaccine available that protects children from chicken pox. Thus routine vaccines are recommended . Some of the symptoms of chicken pox can he ;

  • Loss of appetite 
  • Fatigue
  • Temperature 
  • Headache

Once the chicken pox appears it may look like red or pink raised bumps. And some can also turn into small fluid filled blisters.There might be a break out for several days . Once the blisters are broken they take several days to heal .But if the rash turns more red or also causes high temperature or the spread in the eyes too  it’s better to see the doctor. Sometimes it also leads to secondary bacterial skin infection.

03. Diarrhea and vomiting :

Generally most infants have loose stools.And breastfed babies have more loose stools as compared to formula fed babies, repeatedly unformed and watery stools are diarrhea. Some of the causes can be ;

  • Food poisoning
  • Eating some drinking something they are allergic to
  • A virus
  • Stomach bug

The main remedies for diarrhea and vomiting is to make sure the child stays home and gets proper fluids and stays hydrated . Or else it can cause dehydration , sunken eyes, lethargy , dry mouth , yellow urine etc . Do not give your child any medicine without the doctor’s advice.

04. Measles :

Measles is a very highly infectious illness common in children but can also be seen in adults too .It is caused by a virus and can spread from person to person .It is a serious disease and can also cause diarrhea , pneumonia . They are usually more serious than chicken pox .The symptoms are ;

  • Bad cold and cough with red and watery eyes
  • Gradual rise in the temperature 
  • White marks may be seen at the back of the mouth 
  • Rashes generally appear after 3-4 days 
  • Rashes are red and slightly raised 
  • Mostly the rash appears behind the ears first and then spreads in the face and rest of the body .
  • Eyelids may get crusty .
  • It usually takes around 10 days to heal.

 proper fluids, and healthy liquid diet is better in this condition . Use slightly warm water to clean the crusty eyes. Give your child paracetamol as per the doctor’s advice to get relief in the high temperature.

05. Food allergies :

In a few cases food can cause severe allergic reactions and that can be as serious as life threatening .Thus it’s recommended that after 6-7 months of bird , when the infant is ready , should be introduced with a variety of food to find out what they are allergic to . It can be milk, egg , sea food, nuts or seeds etc .See your doctor or pediatric dietitian who can give you better advice on how you can avoid the allergen without deficieting proper nutritions .

Some other common child illnesses are mumps , bronchitis , skin infection , pain etc. Always seek your child health care providers advice .

In some cases , children may born with some health issues, such as ;

  • Cleft lip or palate 
  • Heart malformations or other birth defects .

These are serious issues and in most times they need surgical treatments .

It is important to emphasize on the child health care system. The parents are advised to visit the pediatrics more often for regular  and timely checkups for a healthy child. And also ensure a healthy and hygienic  lifestyle for the overall well being of the children .
