(Industrialist, Philanthropist and Founder Nanavati Hospital, Bombay)

Founder of the famous Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital at Vile Parle, Bombay simple, plain speaking with charitable disposition, a dedicated social worker, and a distinguished citizen do high integrity, industrialist Shri R.M. Nanavati was born in 1897 in Vaso and received his education in Baroda. At the age of 24, he established his well-known firm “Nanavati & Co. Pvt. Limited.” He also set up “Ulhas Oil and Chemical Industries Pvt. Ltd. at Bhavnagar and Extraction Industries in Maharashtra and Gujarat. He hailed from a well educated and cultured family of Ahmedabad and had toured a number of foreign countries along with his wife, Smt. Sarlaben, a religious minded lady. He was sent to Russia as a one-man delegation to meet Soviet leaders and negotiated purchase of fertilizers on behalf of Government of India.

A staunch vegetarian, Shri Nanavati was deeply interested in Jainism and was responsible for establishing a Chair in Jainism Logic and Philosophy in Poona University.

A philanthropist, Shri Nanavati made a substantial contribution to the cause of education, social welfare, and medicine. The projects where he made large contributions are Sarla Sarjan, a model institute which offers education from Montessori to Junior College in Arts and Commerce and several hobby courses, and Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital, Bombay, inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1951. This 365-bed well-equipped hospital has a Cancer Detection Unit and Tele- Radio- Therapy and Cobalt Unit for treatment of Cancer. He donated over a crore of rupees in cash besides land and property of a similar amount for the hospital.

The iconic Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital carries a luminous legacy. The hospital was founded by Ratilal Manilal Nanavati in memory of his grandfather who was the physician to the royal family of Gaekwads.

When it was still in its gestational stage, the Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi expressed the hope that the institution would serve people from all sections of society. Mahatma Gandhi was among the first to give his blessings and set the course of its journey of care and compassion.

In 1950, the hospital was inaugurated by India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Mother Teresa inaugurated the cancer center and brought the first child for treatment to Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital. This marked the beginning of a long and lasting relationship between her and the hospital. The nuns of Asha Daan regularly bring ailing children to the hospital for medical treatment. The underprivileged children are treated free of cost receiving the same quality of medical care.

From being a 50-bed facility in a single building to over 5 buildings housing 352 beds, we offer a plethora of services in practically every field of modern medicine and healthcare. Nanavati today has over 300 consultants, ably supported by a large nursing, paramedical and technical staff, running its 50 plus departments.

Shah Rukh Khan donated a state-of-the-art medical center in memory of his mother Lateef Fatima called Lateef Fatima Pediatric Centre.

A state-of-the-art Advanced Centre for Radiation Oncology (ACRO), was inaugurated at Nanavati Hospital. It was Mumbai’s first Elekta precise digital linear accelerator with intensity modulated radiation and image guidance.

Hrithik Roshan inaugurated Nanavati Hospital’s Electrophysiology and Electroacoustic Centre for Audiology and Speech Therapy Audiology Centre.

The center is equipped with ultra-modern infrastructure and an internally trained, widely experienced faculty. It is supported by state-of-the-art laboratory & transfusion services along with the fully equipped radiation oncology unit, with facilities for total body irradiation. The center is also an authorized stem cell collection center for DATRI Blood Stem Cell Donor’s Registry.
