Bariatric Surgery Procedure, List of Bariatric Surgeon & Hospitals in India

bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgical procedures are conducted to assist weight loss. Your surgeon will perform the surgery if your weight loss efforts such as medication and lifestyle changes turned to be unsuccessful.

There are two types of bariatric surgeries:

  • Restrictive procedures
  • Malabsorption

A bariatric surgery can also be a combination of both restriction and malabsorption. For the combined procedure, the surgeon performs a surgery to first restrict the quantity of food that your stomach can hold. Once the procedure is done, the stomach will be full quickly and this, in turn, restricts your eating habits; and the procedure then causes malabsorption of nutrients. Bariatric procedures often lead to hormonal changes. Surgeons are commonly using minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopic surgery so the patient can recover quickly.

The most commonly know bariatric surgery procedures include:

  • Gastric bypass
  • Adjustable gastric band
  • Sleeve gastrectomy
  • Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch

Gastric Bypass

It is popularly known as the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and is considered as a dependable weight loss procedure. The procedure has two components involved: first is the creation of a small stomach pouch by dividing the top portion from the rest of the stomach, and the next step involves is to divide the first portion of small intestine. After this, the surgeon connects the bottom end of the small intestine to the stomach pouch.

To complete the procedure, the doctor connects the top portion of the small intestine further down so the digestive enzymes from the new bypassed stomach and the small intestine mix with the consumed food.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

This is a procedure with which the surgeon removes almost 80 percent of the stomach and the remaining portion is a tubular pouch.

There are many ways in which this procedure works. First, the remaining stomach pouch holds smaller volumes for food and this will significantly reduce the amount of food consumed. However, the greater impact will be on the gut hormones that will further affect satiety and blood sugar control.

Adjustable Gastric Band

This procedure involves an inflatable band placed around the stomach’s upper portion. This will create a small pouch. Because of the pouch, you tend to eat and still feel full. The size of the opening that is created between the pouch and the remaining stomach will determine your feeling of fullness.  The size of the opening is reduced eventually with repeated adjustments, also known as fills.

Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch Gastric Bypass

Popularly addressed with its abbreviation, the BPD/DS has two components. First, the surgeon creates a small, tubular stomach pouch and then bypasses a large portion of the small intestine. The first portion of the small intestine is called the duodenum and it is divided just past the stomach outlet. Then a segment of the remaining small intestine (distal) is connected to the stomach pouch’s outlet.

All the procedures work by bypassing the stomach. But before going under the knife for a bariatric surgery, you should be well aware of the procedures, the care required and the pros and cons involved.
